Hello Bantam Team Parents,
Welcome to the 2021 season! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share important information about the upcoming season. Apologies in advance for the long email.
My name is Ken Alberti and I am serving as head coach for the Bantam (grades 1-2) team this season. I have three children and they all play lacrosse. My oldest son is currently a sophomore at GHS and my daughter is in 6th grade at Baldwin. I coached lacrosse for several seasons on the boy’s side and helped for two years with my daughter’s team. My youngest, Harris, will be playing with your boys on the Bantam team this season.
We currently have 17 players on the roster so this season should be a lot of fun for the boys! There are several familiar names on the roster and many others I’m looking forward to meeting. The overall goal for this season is for the boys to have fun, learn and grow their fundamental lacrosse skills (passing, catching, ground balls, cradling, shooting) and begin to experience the benefits of participating in a team sport.
We are currently scheduled to practice on the front field at Nut Plains on Tuesday/Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 pm. Our first practice will be on Tuesday, April 6th. Please plan to arrive a few minutes early for practices so players are dressed in their gear and ready to start practice at 5:30 pm.
I would like to ask for your flexibility if we need to adjust practice schedules during the season. With unpredictable April weather there may be days when fields are closed by the town. Additionally, between work obligations and game schedules for my other two children there may be times I will need to switch practice days to either Monday or Thursday. I am hoping these changes are minimal but I wanted you to be aware of the possibility. Changes will be communicated as early as possible.
We will play games on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We should have about 8-10 games. Most games will be played at 9:00 am. Players will be asked to arrive about 30 minutes prior to each game to ensure we are properly equipped and we have time to warm up before the game. Home games will be played on the front field at Nut Plains Field. Away games locations will be shared once they are finalized and added to the schedule.
Game format will be 7v7 (2 attackmen, 3 midfielders, 2 defensemen, no goalie). With our roster size we will try to run two games simultaneously as long as the other team has enough players to do the same. This will maximize game time for all players on the roster. Players will play all positions during the season.
This season will be the first opportunity for most of our boys to play games with full equipment. Players must wear all equipment for practices and games. Equipment should include lacrosse helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, athletic cleats and mouthguards. Players will not be able to practice or play in games if they are not properly equipped. Any questions please let me know.
There are a couple ways parents can help make this season a great experience for the boys.
- Assistant Coaches – a few parents have reached out to offer support on the field. Thank you! With 17 players on the roster I can definitely use some help. Many of our practices will include small group stations for specific skill building and hands on instruction. Having help running stations and assisting with general practice support would be great. If you are willing to help feel free to join me on the field when we start practicing.
- Practice/Games – having players ready with all equipment, including mouthguard and water bottle will help make each practice and game run smoothly. Weather depending, we may want to coordinate tents, fruit, snacks and extra water for the team on game days. It would be great if someone was willing to help coordinate these items on game days during the season.
- Skill building at home – encourage your son to practice at home. Help them by working on passing/catching and ground balls. Simply handling their lacrosse stick while in the yard will help build their comfort level and overall stick skills. 10-15 minutes each day will make a huge difference over the course of the season.
- COVID-19 Guidance – I’m certain we will hear more from GYLA regarding COVID protocols for this season. Please help us adhere to any/all instructions from the league.
Practice and game schedules are posted on our team page on the GYLA website (guilfordlax.org). As games are added to our schedule they will appear on the site. I will share any updates via email throughout the season. If you need to reach me my cell phone is 631-836-1620 and my email is
. You can call, text or email.
I look forward to seeing you on April 6th!
