Below are some commonly asked questions. Some of the answers can also be found in areas pertaining to your question.
I'm receiving emails from GYL, although I no longer have a player in the program.
To discontinue receiving information from GYLA, you must log into your account and remove yourself from the email list. The last link on the left column on the home page of the web site is called: Edit My Account. From here you'll be able to make any changes you need. Please be aware that GYLA is unable to make those changes to your account for you.
What if I need to make changes to my personal account information?
All families are able to edit their own information (email addresses, phone numbers etc). Log into the website with your username and password. Go to Edit My Account and change any information you want. Please do not give your information to your Coordinator or Coach. This is the families responsibility to change on their own.
What is CONNY?
"CONNY" is an acronym for the Connecticut New York Youth Lacrosse Association. For more information, go to:
http://www.connylacrosse.org/
What is U.S. Lacrosse?
The national governing body of men's and women's lacrosse. All players will become members of U.S. Lacrosse upon registering for the GYL programs. Their website is http://www.uslacrosse.org.
Can I register a child in a grade above or below his/her current grade or age group?
No. GYL follows the CONNY rules and guidelines. Your child is eligible only for his or her current age level of play. Contact the coordinator with questions or concerns about your child's age/grade or team placement.
Does experience affect the team placement of my player?
Players register and play at the appropriate age level, regardless of grade, ability or experience. However, depending on the number of players, we create an "A" team for the more advanced players and a "B" team for developing players. Both teams are competitive travel teams and will enter various tournaments throughout the season.
What if my child has no experience playing lacrosse?
Each child will be placed on a team appropriate for his/her level of ability. Even if your child has no experience playing lacrosse, he/she will be on a team with other players in the same age division. However, depending on the number of players, we create an "A" team for the more advanced players and a "B" team for developing players.
What does my registration fee go towards?
We determine the registration fee by adding up all of our costs and looking at the number of participants. Example of cost covered are referees and officials, uniforms, tournament fees, indoor facilities, personal and team equipment (goalie equipment, goals, cones, nets, balls, etc.), medical kits, etc.
How will I know when are fields closed for weather related reasons:
Weekdays:
Guilford Parks and Recreation is responsible for making the call on field closures during the weekday. They will NOT makes the call before 4:00pm. They will put a recording on the weather cancelation line at Guilford Parks and Rec. That number is (203) 453-8068 x 301. If they determine that fields are closed earlier in the day, we will post the information on the website.
Upon notification of field closings, coaches are responsible for immediately contacting opposing coaches and referees. Their teams should be notified directly after that. Please do not hesitate as travel times for opposing teams must be considered!
Weekends:
GYLA is responsible for walking the fields for the “squish test” on the weekends to determine if the fields are playable. Parks and Rec is not responsible for field closings during the weekend. If a practice of game is to be postponed/canceled, GYLA will post on the website ASAP. Early start times means an early walk by the coach using the field. We ask that any changes must be communicated to the Girls/Boys Coordinator(s) and the Ref Scheduler prior to notifying team and opposing team.
I want to sign my child up, but cannot afford the fees. What can I do?
The GYLA offers financial aid based on certain criteria having been met. For details, go to the registration tab at the top of the website page. You will see a tab called "Financial Assistance" where you will find information on how to apply for financial assistance.
